Given our nested global crises, there is an urgent need to reshape our relations in ways that acknowledge the fundamental interdependence of everything that exists. This talk will explore how service design might be reimagined to move beyond reinforcing the assumption of separateness. Drawing on relational theories from sociology and anthropology, four core tenets of relationality in service design will be shared: 1) actors are constituted by their relations; 2) service systems are entanglements of manifold relations; 3) agency is an emergent property of interaction; and 4) change is a non-deterministic process of becoming-in-relation. It will highlight practical implications for service design practices based on each tenant and outline a direction for how we might be able to work together to shape our relations otherwise.
